What’s next for App Store?

AI is now in our living rooms and cars and, often, our pockets. As it becomes more pervasive, we’ve begun to entrust it with increasingly greater responsibility. But as AI becomes even more adept at performing a wider array of complex tasks, how can we build user trust in its expanding capabilities?

“Machines get biased because the training data they’re fed may not be fully representative of what you’re trying to teach them,” says IBM Chief Science Officer for Cognitive Computing Guru Banavar. “And it could be not only unintentional bias due to a lack of care in picking the right training dataset, but also an intentional one caused by a malicious attacker who hacks into the training dataset that somebody’s building just to make it biased.”

The quest for AI creativity

Creative professionals are increasingly embracing digital tools to create extraordinary works of art. AI has begun its foray into the creative digital toolbox, having already helped write pop ballads, mimicked the styles of great painters and informed creative decisions in filmmaking. How far can—or should—AI go in the creative process?

It’s easy for AI to come up with something novel just randomly. But it’s very hard to come up with something that is novel and unexpected and useful.

By specifying teaching parameters for creativity, artists have gone as far as using AI to design sculptures and create paintings that mimic great works of art. For example, using the style transfer technique, artists can “teach” AI algorithms by showing them pictures of a style of painting like Impressionism to transpose photos and video to the same style.

“It’s about the augmentation of creativity. In the end, the human really is the one being creative, and it’s more about how can you get better efficiencies,” says Smith. “With filmmaking, 99% of the work is actually very mundane. It’s going through hundreds of hours of video in some cases to arrive at the core pieces to use. So there’s still a very good reason to use technology as an assistant here, rather than replace the human in the loop.”
